Men's Squash Splits Matches on Opening Day

PHILADELPHIA – The Penn men’s squash team went 1-1 in its opening weekend on Saturday. In the morning match the CSA preseason No. 7 Quakers hosted No. 6 Cornell. The Red and Blue were unable to hold off the higher seated Big Red as they fell, 8-1. In the afternoon Penn was matched up with Middlebury and the Quakers cruised through the match with an 8-1 win.

The match against Cornell was closer then the final, 8-1, score portrayed as six of the matches went at least four games. Andrew Zimmerman was the solo Quakers to notch a win with a 9-0, 9-6, 10-9 victory in the No. 6 position over Charlie Wagner. At the No. 5 spot, Porter Drake took his match to five sets as he eventually fell to Steven Peever. Drake won the first two games, 9-3 9-5, but Peever fought back to claim the final three games, 9-4, 9-6, 9-2. William Browne played Chris Vernick at the No. 8 position and the two battled through five games. Vernick was the eventual winner – 0-9, 9-0, 3-9, 9-4, 9-2.

Penn dominated the afternoon match against the Panthers. In the No. 1 position, Mark Froot worked his way back from a two game deficit to win, 7-9, 5-9, 9-7, 9-3, 9-1. At the No. 2 spot Trevor McGuinness lost his first game, 9-7, before retiring in Penn’s only loss of the match. All other matches were three game sweeps for the Red and Blue.

The Quakers are back Thursday, Dec. 4 when they host Navy at 7 p.m. at Ringe Courts.
