NEW HAVEN Conn. - Just as the Quakers topped Williams College on Jan. 16, the Penn men's squash team again edged the Ephs, 5-4, to win the "B Division" finals of the College Squash Association Team Championships Sunday afternoon on the campus of Yale University. With the victory, the Red and Blue finish the season 8-7 overall, ranked ninth in the nation, and Hoehn Cup champions.
Penn shot out to an early start and never let up, as the Quakers won five of the first six matches played, leaving little drama for the final contests of the day. Trevor McGuinness' and Zuhaib Mohiuddin's 3-1 wins in the No. 3 and 6 positions started Penn off right. The Ephs' Bernard Yaros claimed a 3-0 win over Akhilesh Nayak at the basement of the ladder to round out the first wave of matches.
Mark Froot, Porter Drake, and William Browne clinched the Cup for Penn with three consecutive wins. Froot in the No. 2 spot topped Will Morris, 3-0, while Drake and Browne pushed out four-game wins in the No. 5 and No. 8, respectively.
With the match already decided, Williams came back to win the final three matches of the afternoon over No. 1 Dan Greenberg, No. 4 James Clark, and No. 7 Brooks Russell. Russell won his first game 9-11, before falling in the final three, including a hard fought 14-12 loss in game three.
