Men's Swimming 4th After Day One of Ivy Championships

The men's swimming teamused some key performances froma group of seniors in their last go-around at the Ivy LeagueChampionshipsto position itself right in the middle of a group gunning for third place. Harvard and Princeton wasted little time at Thursday night's finals, already establishing a near 150-point lead on the rest of the field.

Although preliminaries were held on Thursday morning, the championships really got underway with the 200 Freestyle Relay. A sub-20 second leg from senior Peter Amos was critical as the Penn team of Alex Porter, Amos, Rhoads Worster and Dillon McHughheld off Dartmouth by .06 to take fourth place.

In the 200 IM, senior Brendan McHugh (1:48.69)and Rhoads Worster (1:48.88)finished within two tenths of a second of each other while ending sixth and seventh overall. Chris Lyons and Konner Scott were the top two finishers in the bonus consolation race, placing 17th and 18th, respectively.

Senior diver Jeff Cragg was among a group of six who achieved a NCAA 'A' cut with a score of 318.85 on the 1-meter boards, finishing in third place. The night closed with another great swim by a Penn relay team, this time finishing thirdin the 400 Medley. Dillon and Brendan McHugh had the team in position with the opening 200 in the back and breaststroke, while Worster and Porter took over down the stretch, touching the wall with a time of 3:15.41, the second-best time in Penn history. Columbia was DQ'din the race, allowing the Quakers to jump ahead of them into fourth place.

Competition resumes tomorrow morning at 11 a.m. with preliminary heats in the 400 IM, 100 Butterfly, 200 Freestyle, 100 Breaststroke, 100 Backstroke and 3-meter diving. The 1000 Freestyle will also be held, leading into Friday's finals at 6 p.m.
