PHILADELPHIA - The Quakers opened their season with a victory, taking down Columbia 161-139 on Friday night and avenging last season's loss to the Lions.
Penn had eight first place finishes in the 16 events, including a pair of first place finishes from sophomore diver Jeff Cragg, fellow classmate Brendan McHugh and senior James Fee.
Cragg took first in both the one and three meter diving competitions with scores of 312.0 and 317.93 respectively, while McHugh took the 100 and 200 yard breaststroke in times of 58:54 and 2:07.74. Fee won the 200 free in a time of 1:43.58, while taking first in the 500 (4:41.49) as well.
Freshman Stephen Carroll took the 1000 free in his first race as a Quaker, while first year Ryan Littlefield finished in second. The 200 yard free relay team of Brett Gomes, Peter Amos, Chris Buck and Kyle Loughran ended the meet on a high note with their first place finish in a time of 1:23.75.
The Red and Blue return to the pool next week when they take on Cornell and Princeton in Princeton at 5 p.m.
