Men's Swimming Caps off Season, Defeats La Salle

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming and diving team ended its regular season with a win, after defeating La Salle Saturday afternoon in Kirk Pool, 160.5-131.5. The Quakers won nine events, finishing one-two-three in the 200 free and 200 breast and one-two in the 100 free.

The 200 medley relay A Team – sophomore Phillip Hu, junior Kyle Yu, sophomore Michael Wen, junior Eric Schultz -- jump started the evening’s victory with a first-place finish and a time of 1:31.59. Junior Chris Swanson kept the ball rolling as he placed first in the 1000 free (9:17.11). He then later finished first in the 500 free (4:35.94) while freshman Alex Peterson tied for second with La Salle’s Mattias Glenesak at 4:39.66. Fellow freshman Taylor Uselis finished fourth at 4:41.03.

Sophomore Kevin Su led the Red and Blue to their first top-three finish, winning the 200 free in 1:41.38. Senior Sam Ruddy took second in 1:42.53 and Wen came in third at 1:44.79. Fellow sophomore Wes Thomas also led a one-two-three finish, taking first in the 200 breast with a time of 2:04.63. Yu, who won the 100 breast earlier (57.12), touched the wall next at 2:05.00 and sophomore Cole Hurwitz round out the top three with a time of 2:08.74.

Schultz added two wins of his own, winning the 50 free in 20.76 and the 100 free in 45.75. Su finished second to Schultz in the 100 free, finishing at 46.48. Wen also added a win, touching the wall first in the 100 fly at 50.83.

Today’s meet marks the end of the regular season for Penn. The Quakers will now turn their focus to preparing for the Ivy League Championships which will take place at Princeton, Feb. 26-28.
