PHILADELPHIA - Mere hours removed from the a season-opening defeat at Columbia, Penn men's swimming was back home at Sheerr Pool where they recovered and took down UConn on Saturday afternoon by a score of 169-130.
The 'A' 200 medley relay team of Nick Johnson, Kyle Yu, Rhoads Worster and Brett Gomes were the first Penn victors on the day. They finished with a time of 1:33.28 to get to the wall over a full second ahead of UConn's 'A' team in the race.
The Quakers really began to assert their dominance with the 200 Freestyle. Sophomores Sam Ruddy and Konner Scott and freshman Bradley Wachenfeld came in 1-2-3 for Penn, all within one second of each other. Ruddy took home the win in 1:42.54. That wouldn't be Penn's only clean sweep of the day either. In the 200 Butterfly, Sam Haley, Alex Porter and Stephen Carroll all squeaked past the Huskies' contingent to the wall. Haley earned his first collegiate victory with a time of 1:52.20. Penn would repeat the feat one last time in the 500 Freestyle with Wachenfeld, Chris Swanson and Ruddy placing in the top three of the distance race. Wachenfeld earned the win with a time of 4:38.00.
Perhaps the most impressive performance of the day came from Worster in the 100 Backstroke. The junior came within one one-hundredth of a second of tying the school record, winning the race by a landslide with a time of 49.96. He added his second individual victory of the day in the 100 Butterfly, outpacing his teammate Haley and clocking in at 49.88.
Elsewhere, Yu was a double-winner in both the 100 and 200 Breaststroke, making him a perfect 4-for-4 to start his collegiate career after a pair of wins in those same events last night. Another freshman, Brendan Crystal, was able to outlast a Connecticut opponent and win his first career race, taking the 200 IM in 1:55.01.
Penn is home once again next weekend, facing an Ivy League tri-meet with Cornell and Princeton on Saturday. Diving will get started at 1 p.m. with swimming set tobegin at 3:30 p.m. from Sheerr Pool.
