Men's Swimming Splits with Dartmouth and Yale

HANOVER, N.H. – On Saturday, the University of Pennsylvania men’s swimming and diving team faced off with Dartmouth and Yale for the first meet of the New Year and the second Ivy tri-meet of the season. The Red and Blue defeated the Big Green, 169-130, but fell to the Bulldogs, 82-217, at the Karl Michael and Spaulding Pool in Hanover, N.H.

Junior Eric Schultz was the lone Quaker to win an event, touching the wall first in the 50 free at 20.88 -- three hundredths of a second before Yale swimmer Aaron Greenberg (20.91). In addition to his first place finish in the 50 free, Schultz took second in the 100 free with his time of 46.03 and also helped Penn take second in the 200 medley relay. The “A-Team” – freshman CJ Schaffer, junior Kyle Yu, sophomore Michael Wen, Schultz – touched the wall at 1:31.96, 0.81 seconds behind Yale’s “A-Team” (1:31.15).

Adding a third place finish in the 1000 free and a second place finish in the 500 free was junior Chris Swanson. Swanson finished the 1000 free in 9:24.04 and the 500 free in 4:36.41. Freshman Taylor Uselis also finished within the top five in the 500 free, touching the wall at 4:41.46.

Freshmen Alex Peterson and Hunter Brakovec added third and fifth-place finishes in the 200 fly. Peterson touched the wall in 1:52.68 and Brakovec came in at 1:53.99. In the 100 fly, Wen and fellow sophomore Jimmy Jameson went two-three, coming in at 49.89 and 50.51 respectively.

The breaststroke group finished in places three through six in the 100 and took fourth and fifth places in the 200. Yu led the way in the 100, placing third in 56.62. Junior Bobby Francis and sophomores Cole Hurwitz and Jordan Hurwitz were next to touch the wall. C. Hurwitz and Yu also raced in the 200 breast, finishing fourth and fifth respectively.

Next up for the Red and Blue is the final Ivy tri-meet of the season at Brown with Harvard next Saturday, Jan. 17 at noon.
