Men's Swimming Takes Care of Brown, 173-127

Boca Raton, Fla. - Penn won its first meet of 2011 Wednesday behind multiple first place finishes from juniors Brendan McHugh and Jeff Cragg, beating Ivy foe Brown 173-127 on the campus of Florida Atlantic University.

The Quakers were one of five schools swimming at FAU, as Brown, host Florida Atlantic and nationally ranked LSU (22nd) and Purdue (21st) swam in the meet. The Red and Blue beat Brown and host FAU (170.5-127.5) but fell to both LSU and Purdue.

McHugh won three individual events and also helped the Quakers to a third place finish in the 200-yard medley relay. The breaststroker won the 100 in 55.82, the 200 in 2:02.82 and touched first in the 200-yard I.M. with his time of 1:52.19. The junior also teamed with Matt Krey, Rhoads Worster and Peter Amos to finish the 200-yard medley relay in 1:33.29.

Cragg, meanwhile, dominated the diving events on Wednesday. The junior won the 1-meter with a score of 284.5 and then totaled 319.40 to come away victorious in the 3-meter event. Junior Alex Marple finished second the in the 3-meter with his score of 260.20.

Penn also got a third place finish from Worster in the 200-yard butterfly as the freshman swam the event in 1:53.47. The quartet of Brett Gomes, Worster, Paul Maneri and Amos earned the Red and Blue's final top-three finish, taking third in the 200-yard free relay with their time of 1:25.41.

The Quakers return to the pool a week from Saturday, Dec. 15, when they travel to New Haven to swim against Dartmouth and Yale, beginning at 10 a.m.
