Men's Swimming Takes on Brown at FAU Wednesday

PHILADELPHIA - The Quakers travel south for their first meet of 2011 and look to win their first dual meet of the season when they take on Brown on the campus of Florida Atlantic University, Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Penn opened the season with losses in its first three meets but rebounded in convincing fashion a month ago, beating five other teams to claim the top spot at the Total Performance Invitational at Kenyon College, Dec. 3-5.

At Kenyon, the Red and Blue won the meet with 1,600 points and eight first place finishes over the three days of swimming. Junior Brendan McHugh won four events himself, taking first in the 100-yard breast, 200-yard breast, 200-yard I.M. and 400-yard I.M. In the 400 I.M. prelims he broke the school record of 3:56.21 set by Steve Kuster in 1991, finishing in 3:55.83. In the finals he smashed his own mark, taking the event in 3:53.64.

Sophomore Nick Johnson also set a school record in the meet, finishing the 100-yard back in 49.95. He broke the previous mark of 50.06 set in 1992 by Bill Thompson.

Brown enters the meet at 2-1 and 0-1 in league dual meets, after dropping a narrow decision to Dartmouth, 151-149. The Bears last meet of 2010 was at the Princeton Invitational, where the team finished fourth in a field which featured Florida, Princeton, Washington State and Rutgers.

At the invite, Brown got a second place finish from Tommy Glenn in the 200-yard fly with a time of 1:51.86 and second and third place finish from Conor Carlucci. Carlucci took second in the 100 breast and then finished third in the 200 breast.
