PHILADELPHIA - The 2011-12 will be a season of new beginnings for men's tennis at Penn. Not only will the Quakers be under the direction of first-year head coach David Geatz, but this will also be the first season that the team will be able to play at the Hamlin Tennis Center as part of the brand-new Penn Park. Geatz comes to Penn after a successful collegiate coaching career that included stops at New Mexico, Minnesota and Cornell. In his first year at Penn, the Quakers will be at home for nine matches this spring, including four late-season Ivy League matchups.
In addition to playing nine of the 20 contests this upcoming spring on their home courts, Penn will take part in four fall tournaments. The fall portion of the schedule gets underway when the Quakers travel to New Jersey and take part in the Princeton Invitational from Sept. 16-18. The following weekend, the team will be in New York for the USTA Collegiate Invitational that runs from Sept. 23-25. Two weeks later, the team will be back in New York for the Columbia Invitational from Oct. 7-9. Men's tennis will culminate the fall season with ITA qualifying tournament. Penn's ITA Regional will take place from Oct. 13-18.
To kick-off the spring season, Penn will host four of its first five matches at home. The first of those home matches is on Feb. 4 against George Washington. The following weekend, the Quakers will travel to Navy on Feb. 10 in their only road match of February. To close out the month, Penn will host three home matches against Georgetown (Feb. 15), Fairleigh Dickinson (Feb. 18) and Buffalo (Feb. 25).
Those three home contests will be the last chance to watch the Quakers at home for over a month as they will begin a streak of seven consecutive road matches to begin March. The long road stretch will get underway on Mar. 3 against UMBC. After that weekend match, the team will travel to Florida over spring break. In Florida, the Quakers will play four matches. Up first for Penn will be a meeting with Stetson on Mar. 5. Following a day off, the team will play Florida Southern (Mar. 7), South Florida (Mar. 8) and Florida Gulf Coast (Mar. 9) in a string of three consecutive days of matches.
After returning from spring break, the team will travel to Virginia the following weekend. While in Virginia, Penn will take on Old Dominion (Mar. 17) and William & Mary (Mar. 18) to close out the seven-game road stretch. Coming back to their home courts the following weekend, the Quakers will have a home match against Saint John's on Mar. 28 in their final preparation for the Ivy League season.
Ivy League play for Penn will begin on Mar. 31 as the Quakers host Princeton in their first Ivy match. The following weekend, two more Ivy League home matches await as Yale (Apr. 7) and Brown (Apr. 8) will make the trip to Philadelphia. Penn will then take to the road the following weekend as it travels north to Harvard (Mar. 14) and Dartmouth (Mar. 15). In the final weekend of Ivy League play, Geatz and his squad will travel to one of his former coaching stops as Penn heads to Cornell to take on the defending Ivy League champions on Mar. 20. The Quakers will then return home for the regular-season finale against Columbia on Apr. 22.
Last season, Penn finished with a 12-7 record overall and finished seventh place in the Ivy League. The Quakers return three players (Ivan Turudic, Phil Law and Jason Lin) that each won at least 10 matches a season ago. In addition to these three, Zach Katz was honored as a second-team All-Ivy performer in doubles competition last year.
