Providence, R.I. - The Quakers got some big wins when they needed them most on their way to a tight 4-3 victory over Brown in Providence at Saturday afternoon.
Penn dropped the doubles point but won four of six singles matches to earn the team's first Ivy League victory of the season and improve to 11-3 overall.
Freshman Nikola Kocovic improved his record to 3-0 in the Ivy League this year and tied up the match at 1-1 early with a straight set win at No. 5 singles. However, straight-set wins at No. 4 and No. 6 put the Bears in front 3-1.
Senior Hicham Laalej jumpstarted the Quaker comeback with a straight set win at No. 1 singles. Freshman Ivan Turudic stepped up his game and needed a third set, but got the 6-4 win in the final set to tie the match at 3-3.
The victory came down to Phil Law and at No. 3 singles. Law won the first set but dropped the second to send it to a final set. In the third, Law found himself trailing 4-2 before earning three straight points to take the 5-4 lead. The junior wasn't able to close the match out and it went to a tiebreaker. Law had to save a pair of match points but eventually fought back to take a 7-6 lead before serving out the match for the Penn win.
Head coach Nik DeVore was pleased with his team's performance. "We had a great effort from our guys today," said DeVore. "They played tough and really showed composure in a less than friendly environment."
