Men's Tennis Can't Upset No. 64 UC-Irvine; Falls, 6-1

IRVINE, Calif.Penn finished up its 2009 men’s tennis Spring Trip with a 6-1 loss to No. 64 UC-Irvine. Hicham Laalej picked up the lone win for Penn, winning in straight sets over Steven Henderson at No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-3.

The doubles point was hotly contested, with all three matches seeing the victors need nine points to win. Penn won at No. 2, with Phil Law and Justen Roth defeating Zac Tsai and Jon Kazarian, 9-7. Laalej and Adam Schwartz staved off seven match points at No. 1 doubles, but fell, 9-8. Alex Vasin and Jason Lin also lost, 9-8, at No. 3.

After Laalej, Law and Vasin came the closest to picking up wins for Penn in singles, losing in three sets.

Law, playing at No. 3, lost to Wes Miller, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. Vasin, at No. 4, fell to Khunpoi Issara, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

“It was the end of the trip and I think we ran out of gas a little,” head coach Nik DeVore said. “Still, we had our chances and the match was quite closer than the final score indicates.”

The loss evens Penn’s record on the Spring Trip to 2-2. Overall, the Quakers are 7-6.

The Red and Blue are back on the courts Mar. 24 against UC-Riverside at 4 p.m.
