Men's Tennis Comes Out on Top in Penn Invite

PHILADELPHIA – Perfect tennis weather provided by Mother Nature allowed all of the matches to be played in a timely manner during the Penn Invitational this weekend at the Hamlin Tennis Courts in Penn Park. The final matches of the fall tournament wrapped up on Sunday, and the University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team came out on top.

Over the course of the weekend, the Quakers totaled 29 wins. Freshman Josh Pompan went 4-0 in singles, while senior Jeremy Court went 3-0 in singles and 3-0 in doubles. In the final day’s competition, the Red and Blue saw opponents from Buffalo and Binghamton, while most of them were from Penn State.

Penn continued to standout at the conclusion of day two of the Penn Invitational. The Quakers were 8-5 on the day in singles play and 3-4 in doubles. Seven members of the Red and Blue were 1-0.

All eyes turned to freshman Josh Pompan, who defeated St. John’s Federico Ruiz in a thrilling third-set tiebreaker, 6-0; 3-6; 7-6(5), during the final match on day one. At the end of Friday’s play, the Quakers totaled 13 wins and five losses as the team advances in the tournament.

Pompan and freshman Nicolas Podesta posted two victories on the day. Earlier in the day, Pompan defeated Buffalo freshman Noah Andersson, 6-2; 6-4, while Podesta took out UB’s Damien David, 6-4; 6-4. Podesta finished his day with an identical two-set win over St. John’s Vaidik Munshaw.
