Men's Tennis Defeated by Harvard, 5-2

PHILADELPHIAFor the first time in eight home matches, Penn failed to defend home turf, falling to Harvard, 5-2, on Saturday. With the loss, Penn’s record drops to 10-10 and 1-4 in the Ivy League.

Harvard picked up a win in the doubles point with a 3-0 sweep. The Crimson had quick wins at No. 2 and No. 3, winning those matches 8-2 and 8-1. No. 1 singles was a close contest, as Hicham Laalej and Adam Schwartz took Harvard’s No. 1 team to a tiebreaker before losing 8-7 (5).

After losing the first singles match, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 2, Penn rallied to tie the match at 2-2 with wins at No. 4 and No. 5. Phil Law was victorious at No. 4, defeating Davis Magham 6-2, 6-2. Fellow freshman Jason Lin picked up a win over Alistair Felton, 6-4, 6-3, to square things up.

From there, the tide turned in the Crimson’s favor as Harvard won the final three matches. Sasha Ermakov defeated Schwartz at No. 3 and a win from Michael Kalfayan at No. 6 clinched the match. Kalfayan defeated Justen Roth, 4-6, 6-3, 7-6(5), to cap a back and forth match and the overall dual.

At No. 1 singles. Chris Clayton rallied from a first-set loss to defeat Penn’s Hicham Laalej, 5-7, 6-4, 6-1, to finish off the match.
