Men's Tennis Defeated by Michigan, 6-1

PHILADELPHIA – The Quakers had several close matches with the No. 28 University of Michigan men’s tennis team, but could only come through with one singles win, losing to the Wolverines, 6-1.

Penn lost the doubles point, despite strong performances from their pairs. At No. 1 doubles, Jason Pinsky and Joseph Lok lost to the No. 2 doubles pair in the nation, Brian Hung and Matko Maravic, 8-4. In the No. 3 spot, Justin Fox and Brandon O'Gara took a 3-1 lead over Ryan Heler and Andrew Mazlin, before the Michigan pair rallied, claiming seven of the next nine games to take the 8-5 win, clinching the doubles point for the Wolverines. In the No. 2 spot, Mikhail Bekker and Jonathan Boym battled hard, tying the match up at 7-7, before losing the next two sets to George Navas and Mike Sroczynski, for a final score of 9-7.

Four of Penn’s six singles matches went to three sets, as the Red and Blue fought hard to stay with Michigan. In the No. 1 singles spot, No. 50 Jason Pinsky fell to No. 52 Matko Maravic after winning the first set, 5-7, 6-2, 6-3. Sophomore Jonathan Boym also won his first set in the No. 2 singles spot against No. 39 Brian Hung, before losing the match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the No. 3 spot, sophomore Justin Fox lost to Ryan Heller, 6-2, 6-4, while Joseph Lok lost to Andrew Mazlin in the No. 4 spot, 6-4, 6-2. Freshman Adam Schwartz lost in the No. 6 singles spot to Scott Bruckman, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4.

Senior Mikhail Bekker’s win at No. 5 saved the Quakers from being swept in the last match of the day. Bekker beat George Navas, 6-1, 6-7(9), 6-4.
