CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Penn advanced to the semifinals of the 2009 ECAC Championships with a 4-3 win over Cornell at Harvard on Saturday in a match that lasted four hours. The Quakers, seeded fourth in the tournament, will take on top-seeded Harvard on Sunday. The Crimson are also ranked No. 46 in the country.
Cornell won the doubles point by a 2-1 score. Alex Vasin andJusten Rothpicked up Penn’s lone win in doubles with an 8-4 win at No. 3.
In singles, Penn won at Nos. 1, 2 and 3 in straight sets. Hicham Laalej, Jonathan Boym and Adam Schwartz picked up the wins at those spots for the Red and Blue. At No. 5 singles, Vasin won a three-set match 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 to secure the win.
There will be little turnaround time for Penn as they take to the courts with the Crimson at 3 p.m. on Sunday.
