SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – On the second day of its Spring Trip, the Penn men’s tennis team rebounded from a loss in its first match, defeating UC-Santa Barbara on the Gauchos’ home courts, 4-3.
Penn won the doubles point to start the day. Head Coach Nik DeVore was pleased that the team came out with intensity in the opening point.
“Winning the doubles was a great way to start a road match,” he said.
In doubles, the No. 1 team of Hicham :Laalej and Adam Schwartz won, 8-4. At No. 3, Justen Roth and Phil Law won, 8-2, to clinch the point.
“I was really impressed with the play of Justen and Phil at doubles today,” DeVore said. “They came up big for us and we may have discovered a promising new tea,.”
In singles, Schwartz won at No. 2, while Law (No. 3) and Jason Lin (No. 4) also picked up singles wins.
“Adam Schwartz has come up big in singles lately,” DeVore said. “He has been competing really well since stepping up the ladder lately. Phil and Jason played with a lot of confidence today as well.”
Devore was especially pleased with the win in the fact that the team won without senior captain Jonathan Boym and regular starter Alex Vasin, who were out with scheduled rest days.
