PHILADELPHIA -Phil Law was 2-0 with wins in both doubles and singles, and the rest of the men's tennis team fell in line behind their senior captain as Penn downed Fairleigh Dickinson by a score of 6-1 at the Levy Tennis Pavilion on Saturday afternoon.
Penn jumped out to the 1-0 lead early on, taking two out of three doubles matches. Law and teammate Kyle Roth were the first to claim a win, 8-6, at No. 3 doubles. The No. 1 team of Ivan Turudic and Nikola Kocovic were the next to wrap up. Their 8-4 win clinched the point for the Quakers despite a loss for the No. 2 team of Mark Milbrandt and Rob Wong, who fell 9-7.
Once singles began, Penn quickly asserted its superiority. Zach Katz started it off with a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles to give the Quakers a 2-0 edge. Moments later, Law put an exclamation point on his day with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2 to give Penn an almost insurmountable lead. Freshman Jeremy Court put the match to bed at No. 4 with a 6-0, 6-3 victory to put the Red and Blue ahead, 4-0.
Rob Wong ran his opponent ragged at No. 5, claiming a 6-1, 6-4 win in his singles debut of the spring. With the Quakers up 5-0, the two matches that required a third set went instead to a 10-point tiebreak. In those two matches, Turudic took Penn's lone loss of the afternoon, falling to FDU's Ibrahim Shams, 6-3, 5-7, 8-10, while Jason Lin defeated Dominic Hemy, 4-6, 6-4, 10-5 to wrap up the 6-1 triumph.
