Men's Tennis Drops Second Close Match to Marquette

PHILADELPHIA -- It was another tough loss for the University of Pennsylvania men's tennis team, which dropped its second close match to Marquette Sunday morning, 5-2. The night before, the Quakers fell to Buffalo in their spring opener. Three individual matches against the Golden Eagles were determined in three sets.

Marquette won the doubles point, after defeating all three of Penn’s doubles teams.

After the singles began, freshman Marshall Sharp was the first Quaker to win a set for the Red and Blue (6-1), but freshman Matt Nardella, playing in the No. 4 slot, was the first Quaker to give Penn a point, after he defeated Gleb Sklyr (6-3, 6-3).

The Golden Eagles took back the lead with a win at the No. 1 spot, when Marquette’s Dan Mamalat defeated senior co-captain Nikola Kocovic (6-2, 6-3).

At the No. 5 spot, Sharp dropped the second set to Nick Dykema, 3-6, but came back to win the match with a 6-4 victory in the third set. The score was tied once again.

But Sharp’s point was the last one the Red and Blue earned on the day, after tight battles at the No. 2, 3, and 6 spots.

In the No. 3 slot, junior Jeremy Court pushed Golden Eagle Logon Collins to tiebreakers in the first two sets, falling in both (6-5, 6-5). Shortly after, sophomore Vim De Alwis, in the No. 2 spot, fell to Vukasin Teofanovic in the third, after splitting the first two sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-4).

Even though Marquette already won the match, the No. 6 spot battled it out to the very end. Freshman Thomas Spratt had taken the first set over Cameron Tehrani, 6-3, but dropped the second set, 6-2. Spratt fell behind in the third set and lost, 6-4.

The Quakers will be back in action next weekend, when they travel to Dartmouth for the ECAC Indoor Championships.
