Men's Tennis Earns First Ivy Win, Beats Yale 6-1

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's tennis team earned its first Ivy League win on Friday with a 6-1 victory over Yale. The Quakers earned the doubles point and dropped just one singles match en route to the victory.

Senior Jason Pinsky won his match at No. 1 to conclude the day, a match that head coach Nik DeVore called "his cleanest match of the season."

The No. 3 doubles team of Justin Fox and Adam Schwartz got the Quakers off to a strong start with an 8-4 victory. After the No. 2 team of Brandon O'Gara and Eric Riley fell, the top squad, Jason Pinsky and Joseph Lok, picked them up with an 8-6 victory to ensure the doubles point for Penn.

"Fox and Schwartz did really well for us today," DeVore said. "They hadn't played together yet this spring, although they did well at regionals in the fall. It was good to see them step up when we needed them today."

Up a point heading into singles play, the Quakers got off to a strong start there as well as No. 5 Adam Schwartz and No. 6 Brandon O'Gara finished first, each with victories. After No. 3 Justin Fox fell, the Quakers were up 3-1 with three matches still on the court.

"O'Gara has really stepped up for us at No. 6," DeVore said. "This was a big win for him, and it should give him a lot of confidence going forward."

At No. 2, senior Joseph Lok grabbed the first set, 6-3, before falling 3-6 in the second. With the team up 3-1, Lok left little doubt about who would take the overall match when he jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the third set before winning, 6-1. That victory clinched the match for Penn, even with two matches yet to finish.

No. 4 Eric Riley was the next to finish, winning in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

All eyes were then on Pinsky, who had battled to a 7-6 victory his first set with Yale's No. 1, Michael Caldwell. After going up 2-0, Pinsky traded games with Caldwell, holding serve to take a 6-4 victory in the second set. The match was over, and Penn was a 6-1 victor.

Up next for the Quakers will be Brown, which comes into Philadelphia on Saturday fora match scheduled at 2 p.m. at Lott Courts, weather permitting.

"Brown will be a really big test for us," DeVore said. "They are nationally ranked and were one of the preseason favorites in the Ivy League. Today's match gave us a lot of confidence going forward, though, so we are looking forward to it."
