Men's Tennis Falls to .500 With Loss to George Washington

PHILADELPHIA -The Penn men's tennis teamput itself into a bad position on Saturday afternoon, anddespite a pair of victories just moments apart, couldn't pull back even with the George Washington Colonials, falling 5-2. The Quakers go to 1-1 on the season.

George Washington pulled ahead quickly, winning the doubles point by defeating the team of Ivan Turudic and Zach Katz by a score of 8-6 at No.1 before finishing it off with a victory over Nikola Kocovic and Rob Wong, 8-4, in No. 2 doubles. Trailing 6-4, Phil Law and Jeremy Court didn't need to finish their match at No. 3 with the point already decided.

Moving into singles, Turudic recovered from losing the first set at love toeven his match at a set apiece with a 6-1 victory in the second. GW's Francisco Dias was then able to pull it together and take down Turudic in the third, 6-3, giving the Colonials a 2-0 edge. The deficit grew again when Ugur Atalay defeated Kocovic in No. 2 singles, 7-6(4), 2-6, 6-2.

With their back to the wall, the Quakers rallied. It started at No. 6 singles, where Eugen Brazdil fought back from a 5-2 deficit in the first set to win, 7-5. With a 6-4 triumph in the second set, he pulled the Red and Blue back to within two at 3-1. Moments later, Jason Lin concluded a straight sets victory over Viktor Svensson, 7-5 and 6-3.

The match now hinged on the results of Law at No. 3 singles and Court at No. 4. Law and Alexander van Gils were engaged in an exhausting match, still slogging through the second set while many of the three-set matches were ending. After falling 6-4 in the first set, Law came back to take the second, 7-5. But shortly after forcing a decisive third on his end, Court dropped his match to Ulrik Thomsen, 7-5, 2-6, 2-6. With the win in hand for the Colonials, Law and van Gils decided their winner with a tiebreak, which went to van Gils at 10-8.

Penn has 11 days to prepare for its next match, taking on the Georgetown Hoyas at the Levy Tennis Pavilion on February 15. The match is set to begin at 2 p.m.
