PHILADELPHIA Last year, it was a regular season loss to Harvard, and a playoff loss to Brown. This year, the Quakers beat both Brown and Harvard in the regular season; it was Columbia that they didn’t see coming. The Lions beat Penn 4-2 in the regular season, forcing them to share the Ivy League title. And on Sunday, it was the Lions who beat the Quakers in a playoff match, 4-1,to earn the automatic NCAA bid, denying Penn a guaranteed shot at the postseason tournament for the second straight year.
In doubles,Columbia winsat Nos. 1 and 3 gavethe Lionsa 1-0 lead with the doubles point. For Penn, juniors Eric Riley and Jason Pinsky fell to Marty Moore and Paul Ratchford, 8-6 at No. 1, while Adam Schwartz and Brandon O'Gara lost to Mark Clemente and Jonathan Wong, 9-7. With the two wins, Columbia clinched the doubles point, so Jonathan Boym and Mikhail Bekker did not get to finish their match against Jared Drucker and Justin Chow in the No. 2 spot.
In singles, Eric Riley earned Penn’s only win of the day, as he beat Moore, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 4. But losses at Nos. 2, 3 and 5 gave the Lions the win. Clemente beat Boym, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2, while Wong beat Bekker 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3. And junior Brandon O'Gara fell in the No. 5 spot to Ratchford, 7-5, 6-3. Schwartz’s match against Chow at No. 6 and Pinsky’s match against Drucker at No. 1 were both stopped once the Lions had clinched the 4-1 win.
With the win, Columbia earned the Ivy League’s automatic NCAA tournament bid. The men’s tennis selection show will be Tuesday, May 1, and will be aired on ESPNews.
