Men's Tennis Fights Tough in Loss to #35 Harvard

PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team put up a good fight against No. 35 Harvard but fell to the Crimson 5-2 at the Hamlin Tennis Courts on Saturday afternoon. The Quakers (14-7, 0-4 Ivy) won the doubles point but Harvard (15-6, 2-1) took five straight singles matches to clinch the victory. Senior captain Jeremy Court took the last singles match, defeating No. 37 Denis Nguyen at No. 1.

While sophomore duo Matt Nardella and Marshall Sharp lost a tight match at No. 2 singles, the Red and Blue came out with great wins at No. 1 and No. 3 to earn the doubles point for the second straight year over the Crimson. Court and freshman Nicholai Westergaard had an exciting win over the top doubles team in the Ivy League, defeating No. 10 Nguyen/Yeung 6-4 at No. 1 doubles. Junior pair Austin Kaplan and Blaine Willenborg then brought it home with a tiebreaker win over Nicky Hu and Alex Steinroeder, 7-6.

Despite the 1-0 advantage, Harvard went on to win five straight singles matches to clinch. Playing for the last point, Court and Nguyen found themselves once again battling each other at No. 1. Along with his singles ranking, Nguyen also has a singles ranking of No. 37. In a third-set tiebreak, Court came out on top for another impressive win over a rank opponent, topping Nguyen 10-4.

The Quakers will return to the courts Sunday afternoon to face No. 54 Dartmouth. Action will take place on the Hamlin Tennis Courts at 1 p.m.
