Men's Tennis Goes 2-1 in Boise, Idaho

PHILADELPHIA – In their first action of their spring break trip, the men’s tennis team went 2-1, as they lost to Boise State, 6-1, but beat both Oregon and Utah, 6-1.

This was the second time Penn and Boise State have faced off; at National Indoors, Boise State won 4-1. This time, the Broncos took at 6-1 win. In doubles action, Jason Pinsky and Eric Riley lost in the No. 1 spot to Piotr Dilat and Luke Shields, 8-4. Jonathan Boym and Joseph Lok fell to Steve Robertson and Clancy Shields, 8-4, in the No. 2 spot. And Brandon O'Gara and Justin Fox lost to Blake Boswell and Eric Roberson, 8-4, to give Boise State the doubles point.

In singles, Pinsky got the only win for Penn, but it was a big one. He beat junior Luke Shields, who is ranked No. 7 in the nation in singles, 7-5, 6-3. Boym had a good battle with Clancy Shields in the No. 2 spot, but lost 6-7 (4), 7-5, 10-5. Fox lost in the No. 3 spot to Dilat, 6-3, 7-5, while Riley lost at No. 4 to Boswell, 6-2, 6-4. Freshman Simon Bekker suffered his first collegiate loss to Roberson at No. 5, 7-5, 6-1. And freshman Adam Schwartz fell at the No. 6 singles spot, 6-2, 6-4, to Robertson.

The Quakers bounced back on Sunday, with a 6-1 win over No. 73 Utah, their first victory over a nationally-ranked team this year. Despite a loss in the No. 1 doubles spot, Penn took home the doubles point. Pinsky and Riley lost 8-6, to Zach Ganger and Miron Mann. Boym and Lok won in the No. 2 spot, 8-4, over Jason Smits and Othman Zerouali-Ouariti, and O’Gara and Fox triumphed in the No. 3 spot, 8-6, beating Wes Hancock and Timmy Allin. The Quakers won in five of the six singles spots, to clinch the win. Jason Pinsky beat Ganger in the No. 1 spot, 6-1, 6-2. Jonathan Boym won in the No. 2 spot, over Mann, 6-3, 6-2. Sophomore Justin Fox beat Hancock in the No. 3 spot, 6-2, 7-5, while Joseph Lok beat Smits at No. 4, 4-6, 6-2, 7-5. And freshman Adam Schwartz won at No. 6, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, beating Allin. The only loss came at the No. 5 spot, as Simon Bekker fell to Zerouali-Ouariti, 7-6(2), 6-4.

There was no rest for the team after their win, as they had to face off against No. 69 Oregon immediately following their match against Utah. But it didn’t seem to be a problem for the Quakers, as they beat the Ducks, 6-1.

Penn won the doubles point, as Pinsky and Riley won easily in the No. 1 doubles spot, 8-2, over Geoff Embry and Alex Cornelissen. O’Gara and Fox also won in the No. 3 spot, 8-6, beating Mario Verdasco and Francisco Gallardo. Boym and Lok had the only doubles loss, as they fell to Mario Verdasco and Francisco Gallardo, 8-4.

The Quakers again won all but one of the singles points. Pinsky beat Verdasco in the No. 1 spot, 6-2, 6-3, while Boym won at No. 2, beating Cornelissen, 6-3, 6-1. Fox beat Ric Mortega at No. 3, 6-4, 6-0, and Lok beat Mike Mylherd at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2. Freshman Simon Bekker beat Gallardo in three sets, 6-2, 1-6, 10-2. The only loss for Penn came at
No. 6, as Schwartz lost to Geoff Embry, 6-2, 6-4.

Up next, the Quakers will travel to Tulsa to take on Tulsa and Oklahoma State, March 6 and 8.
