Men's Tennis Holds Strong to Defeat Hoyas

WASHINGTON, D.C – It was like déjà vu for the University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team, which took on the Georgetown Hoyas Saturday afternoon in DC. Like last year, the Quakers lost the doubles point and kept it close in the singles, all coming down to the final flight. The Red and Blue prevailed once again, from the help of sophomore Zach Lessen, who clinched the win for Penn with his tiebreaker victory.

Despite losing the doubles point, the Quakers put up one win from senior co-captain Nikola Kocovic and freshman Matt Nardella, who defeated Georgetown’s Jack Murphy and Alex Tropiano at the No. 1 spot, 8-4.

The Hoyas then took a 2-0 advantage after winning at the No. 1 singles, but would find themselves tied up with the Red and Blue with wins from freshman Marshall Sharp at the No 5 slot and sophomore Vim De Alwis at No. 2. Sharp defeated Hoya Casey Distaso in two sets (6-3, 6-4) while De Alwis also defeated his opponent, Shane Korber, in two sets (6-4, 6-3).

Each of the next three matches to finish ended in tiebreakers.

Georgetown took the lead for the final time with a win at the No. 4 spot, but a win from Jeremy Court over Jack Murphy (6-4, 7-6(6)) at No. 3 evened the score once more.

All eyes were on the final match being played at the No. 6 slot, between Hoya John Brosens and Quaker Zach Lessen. After falling in the first set 4-6, Lessen came back to take the second set 7-5. The battle for the win began with the third set and Lessen came out on top in the tiebreaker, 7-6(3).

The win over Georgetown is the 24 consecutive victory for the Red and Blue and the 30th in the all-time series. Penn will return to action on Wednesday when they host St. John’s outdoors at the Hamlin Tennis Courts at 4 p.m.
