New Haven, Conn. - The Quakers went a perfect 5-0 on the opening day of tennis in the ITA Northeast Regional at Yale, getting three singles victories and pair of wins in doubles action.
In singles, freshmen Nikola Kocovic qualified for the main draw by defeating Scott Warden of Connecticut 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 and then Luis Guerara of St. Bonaventure 7-5, 6-1. The first year also won his opening match in the main draw, defeating Ian Laster of Columbia 7-5, 7-6, improving his record to 8-2 in the fall.
Freshman Zach Katz was also victorious on Friday, defeating Bhalla of Hartford, 6-3,6-1. Junior Jason Lin rounded out the singles play with a win over Sztabholz of Stonybrook, 6-1, 6-0.
In doubles, the duo of Hicham Laalej and Eugen Brazdil defeated Brian Mikkelson and Kwei of Quinipiac 8-1 while the freshmen pairing ofKatz and Turudic won 8-2 over Rob Ferrante and Dennis Zlobinski of Fairfield.
Laalej and junior Phil Law are both earned byes because of their seeding, and don't play until Saturday. All five singles players compete in the round of 64 tomorrow, while the doubles take the court in the round of 32.
