NEW YORK, N.Y. - In men's tennis, five singles players reached the quarterfinals of the Columbia Invitational while one doubles team reached the semifinals in Friday's action.
Sophomore Phil Law and a quartet of freshmen in Jason Magnes, Mark Milbrandt, Robert Wong and Lucas Andreika all advanced to their respective quarterfinals with victories on Friday.
Magnes has the most impressive win of the day, taking down No. 2 seed Haig Schneiderman of host Columbia in Flight A. Law also won in Flight A, 6-1, 6-1.
In Flight B, Milbrandt won 7-5, 7-5 while Andreika took a 6-4, 6-4 victory and Wong won recorded a straight set win, 6-3, 6-3. All five singles players next take to the court Saturday morning.
In doubles action, the duo of Law and Milbrandt advanced to the semifinals with two wins, 8-6 and 8-4. The pair will now face off against No. 1 seed Schneiderman and Jonathan Wong of Columbia. The doubles teams of Schwartz and Andreika, and Magnes and Wong won their first match but failed to get out of the quarterfinals.
