PHILADELPHIA – For the final scheduled event of the fall, the University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team will send eight players to compete in the 2014 USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championships at the USTA National Tennis Center in New York. Hosted by St. John’s, the tournament starts Thursday Oct. 16 and runs through Tuesday the 21st.
“I am hoping for a great regional tournament,” said Albert G. Molloy Head Coach of Men’s Tennis David Geatz. “Our guys have been working hard, probably harder in the weight room and off court than ever before, and I think we will have a very good showing.”
Freshman Nicholai Westergaard and sophomore Thomas Spratt will play in the singles qualifying draw on Thursday for a chance to compete in the main draw on Friday.
Junior co-captain Vim De Alwis, freshman Nicolas Podesta, sophomore Marshall Sharp, sophomore Matt Nardella, senior co-captain Jeremy Court, and freshman Josh Pompan will begin their competition in the main draw. De Alwis, Podesta, and Court were seeded in the tournament and received a bye into the second round.
Penn will also be represented in the doubles main draw by three pair: Sharp and De Alwis, Court and Podesta, Spratt and Nardella.
