PHILADELPHIA -The Penn men's tennis team remained unbeaten Saturday afternoon, winning 6-1 over Villanova and 5-2 over visiting Delaware. Penn improves its record to 7-0, while Villanova falls to 0-8 and Delaware to1-1.
In the first match of the day, the Quakers started strong, winning all three doubles matches with an8-3 score.
The Red and Blue kept the momentum going in singles play, taking five of six matches. Sophomore Eugen Brazdil at No. 1 bounced back from a set deficit to win the final two, 6-0, 6-1. Sophomores Phil Law andJason Lin, and freshman Jason Magnes made quick work of their opponents with two-set victories in the two through five positions, while senior Justen Roth recovered from a 6-4 loss in set one, to win 6-4, 6-3 for Penn's sixth victory.
Villanova got their sole point of the day from Trenton Alenik in No. 6 singles, topping senior Jeff Karsh in three sets (6-3, 4-6, 6-3).
In match two, Delaware gave Penn a scare, winning the doubles point after winning the No. 1 and 2 positions 8-3 and 8-4, respectively. The duo of Dmitry Bury and Zach Gorn topped the Blue Hens' Ryan Kent and Nick Piacente, 8-4,in the third spot.
However, with the wakeup call the Quakers took over in singles play. Quick wins came from Schwartz (No. 2), 6-2, 6-4, and Gorn (No. 6), 6-2, 6-1. Magnes won his match in the No. 5 position 6-3, 7-5, while freshman Mark Milbrandt recovered from a 6-2 loss in the first set to win the second two, 6-3, 6-3. To wrap up the match for Penn, Lin outlasted Chris Hincker, 7-5, 6-4,in an intense and hard fought battle.
Delawareearned its one win at No. 1 singles, in whichAustin Longacre downed Brazdil, 6-4, 6-2.
The Quakers are back in action March 8th, when they head out to California for four matches. While there, Penn will face UR Riverside, Loyola Marymount, Gonzaga, and UC Irvine.
