Men's Tennis Rolls Over Temple, Bucknell

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's tennis team earned two victories Sunday in the first of three consecutive Sunday doubleheaders for the team. They opened the day with a 7-0 thrashing of local rival Temple before completing a hard-fought 6-1 victory over Bucknell in the afternoon session.

The Quakers swept the doubles point from Temple, as Jason Pinsky/Joseph Lok and Eric Riley/Brandon O'Gara each won their matches 8-0. Justen Roth/Adam Schwartz were also victories, winning 8-5.

In singles, the Quakers proved to be too much for the Owls, as all six players won in straight sets. Jason Pinsky, playing at No. 1, did not drop a game on his way to a 6-0, 6-0 victory. Joseph Lok and Eric Riley each registered 6-0, 6-2 wins, while Adam Schwartz won 6-2, 6-4 at No. 4.

At No. 5, Justen Roth won 6-1, 6-2, and Dmitry Bury rounded out the match with a 6-2, 6-3 victory at No. 6.

The Quakers would find themseles much more challenged by the Bison of Bucknell, but the result was much the same. In doubles, Pinsky and Lok were once again victorious, this time by an 8-6 score. Riley and O'Gara won 8-3, but Bury and freshman Zach Gorn, making his first collegiate appearance, fell 8-3. Nevertheless, the Quakers had won the doubles point.

After Dmitry Bury won by default in the second set at No. 6, Adam Schwartz was the next Quaker to claim victory, winning 6-2, 6-1 at No. 4. Needing just one more point to win the overall match, the Quakers got that from Justen Roth, who won at No. 5, 7-5, 6-0.

Although the match was essentially over, both No. 1 Jason Pinsky and No. 3 Eric Riley found themselves in tough battles after having won the first set. Riley, who won the first set 6-1, seesawed back and forth with his opponent in the second before finally emerging with a tense 7-6 victory. Pinsky and Bucknell's Ira Reibeisen went back and forth the whole way, but head coach Nik DeVore credited Pinsky's mental toughness, allowing him to take a 7-5, 7-6 victory.
