PHILADELPHIA - The Quakers were sharp on Saturday, winning all three doubles matches and taking every singles matches in straight sets on their way to a 7-0 victory over Stony Brook at the Levy Tennis Pavilion.
Sporting a healthy doubles lineup for the first time this spring, Penn took advantage by winning all three matches. At No. 1, the duo of senior Hicham Laalej and sophomore Mark Milbrandt fought back from an early hole to clinch an 8-6 win. At No.2 it was the freshman pair of Ivan Turudic and Zach Katz who dominated, 8-1, and freshman Nikola Kocovic and senior Zach Gorn made it a clean sweep with an 8-6 win at No. 3.
Junior Phil Law was the first to finish in singles as he improved to 3-0 at No. 3 with his 6-2, 6-0 straight-set win. Kocovic made it look easy at No. 4, finishing with a convincing 6-2, 6-4 victory. Turudic was the third Quaker to finish, using a wide array of shots to take down his opponent at No. 2.
At No. 1, Laalej won the first set easily, 6-3, and then fought back from a 4-1 deficit in the second to claim the 6-4 victory. Junior Jason Lin continued the run of perfection at No. 4 with his 6-1, 6-4 win.
The final match of the day took over two hours but sophomore Jason Magnes came away with a tough straight-set victory. After winning the first set 7-5, Magnes found himself behind 5-4 in the second. He fought back to take a 6-5 lead before going into a tiebreak at 6-6. In the break, Magnes lost the first point but finished with the 7-3 victory.
Penn returns to action on Wednesday when the team takes on Navy at 4 p.m. at the Levy Tennis Pavilion.
