PHILADELPHIA – The University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team opened the spring in style on Saturday, sweeping Navy on at the Hecht Tennis Center.
The Quakers rolled to the doubles’ point, taking victories in all three matches. Nicholai Westergaard and Austin Kaplan (No. 1), along with Kyle Mautner and Josh Pompan (No. 3) were especially dominant, registering triumphs of 6-1 and 6-2 respectively. Matt Nardella and Thomas Spratt rounded out the sweep with a 7-5 win at No. 2 doubles.
In singles action, the Quakers put together straight-set victories at the No. 2-5 positions. Nardella dropped just a single game in a win at No. 3 over Aries Wong, while Westergaard was a 6-1, 6-1 victor over Andrey Majkic at No. 4. Senior Zach Lessen (No. 5) and Pompan (No. 2) were also straight-set winners. Lessen defeated Alex Gaines by a score of 6-2, 6-2, while Pompan took down Krishna Jana, 7-6, 6-2.
Mautner and Kaplan capped off the win, each winning super tiebreakers after splitting sets. Mautner finished off Austin Jones, 7-6, 3-6, 10-4, while Kaplan rebounded from dropping the first set to defeat Andrew Hicks, 2-6, 6-3, 10-4.
