Men's Tennis Takes Down Navy 7-0

PHILADELPHIA - The Quakers got on Navy early and grinded out a 7-0 victory over the Midshipmen at the Levy Tennis Pavilion on Wednesday evening.

The Red and Blue won the doubles point and captured the first three singles matches in straight sets, but the match itself took over three and a half hours as Navy played the Quakers tough in the last three singles matches. Penn won all three doubles for the third straight match, highlighted by a hard-fought 8-6 victory at No. 1 doubles by senior Hicham Laalej and sophomore Mark Milbrandt.

At No. 2 doubles, the freshman duo of Ivan Turudic and Zach Katz won by an 8-3 margin and the No. 3 team of freshman Nikola Kocovic and senior Zach Gorn also were victorious, 8-2.

Laalej made it look easy at No. 1 singles, dispatching of Owen Bullard 6-2, 6-4. Kocovic was the second Quaker to finish, taking No. 4 6-2, 6-3. Turudic won the first set at No. 2 handily, 6-3 but dropped the second 6-1 before coming back to win the third 6-2.

Junior Phil Law also needed three sets at No. 3 singles. Law won the first 6-1, dropped the second 7-5 but took care of business in the final set, 6-2. At No. 5, junior Jason Lin dropped the first set but came back to take the final two, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2 for his fourth victory of the season and sophomore Jason Magnes needed a tiebreaker but ultimately won at No. 6, 6-3, 5-7, 10-4.

Penn improves to 7-0 with the victory while Navy falls to 7-3. The Quakers return to action on Saturday for a 1 p.m. match at Levy against UMBC.
