Men's Tennis Team Has Tough Second Day at UVA Invitational

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's tennis team did not fare as well in their second round of play at the UVA Fall Invitational. In their first round match-ups on Friday, three of the four team members competeting won their matches, but it was not to be, as every team member ended Saturday's second round action with a loss.

On Friday, Mikhail Bekker of Penncame back from a loss in the first set to defeat Keziel Juneau from William and Mary, 1-6, 6-2, 6-3. In Red Singles Quarterfinal action on Saturday, he lost to Lousiville's Horatiu Oltean, 2-6, 6-4, 6-2.

The Green bracket saw two of Penn's team members pull through with wins on Friday. Justin Fox got a tough win over Radford's Mehdi Benhammou, 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-0, to advance to the quarterfinals. Penn's Jonathan Boym also got a big win on Friday, as he beat Bendict Fischer from Memphis, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Both Boym and Fox had success in Saturday's quaterfinals, to advance to the semifinals. Fox defeated Mustafa Gencsoy from George Washinton, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, while Boym beat Winthrop's Rodrigo Santos, 6-7, 6-4, 3-0 ret. But it wasn't to be, as both Quakers ended their day with a loss in the semifinals. Fox fell to Wake Forest's Cory Parr in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, while Boym fell to VCU's Damien Lacombe, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2.

In the Orange Singles bracket, Jason Pinsky started off the tournament with a 6-3, 6-1 loss to Harvard's Chris Clayton. Saturday was a better day for Pinsky, as he started the day off with a consolation quarterfinals win, over Maryland's Nickolai Nielsen, 6-3, 6-4. But he too would lose in the semifinals, as he fell to Louisville's Slavko Radman, 6-4, 6-3.

Pinksy and Boym also took part in the Blue doubles bracket, where they had some success. On Friday, they lost to Old Dominion's Harel Srugo and Henrique Cancado, 9-7. In their consolation quarterfinals match-up, they beat Arvid Puranen and Brandon Corace from Virginia Tech, 8-3. And in semifinal action, they lost to Alabama's Mathieu Thibaudeau and Dan Buikema, to end their run.

The tournament concludes Sunday, with finals in all brackets.
