BOCA RATON, FLA. - The Penn men's tennis team had its six-match winning streak halted by Florida Atlantic on Monday afternoon by a score of 4-3. After losing a hard-fought doubles point, the Quakers needed to win four of six in singles and came up just short.
Florida Atlantic was able to find a way past two of Penn's top doubles pairings in the early stages of the match for the 1-0 lead. Zach Katz and Nikola Kocovic fell to the Owls' Jose Fantova and Will Neuner at No. 1, 8-5. Shortly after that, Jeremy Court and Vim De Alwis lost at No. 2 to Robert Dubuque and Andrei Morin-Kougoucheff, 8-6. Only the No. 3 team of Kyle Roth and Sylvester Wee earned a win in doubles, taking out Sean Bacha and Matthew Samberg by a score of 8-6.
FAU expanded its lead with wins in the first two singles matches to wrap up. Neuner downed Court at No. 2, 6-2 and 6-3. After that, Dubuque dispatched Austin Kaplan at No. 6, 6-1, 6-1, for a 3-0 lead in the match. A win from De Alwis at No. 5 (6-3, 6-4 over Bacha) delayed the loss, but Fantova dominated the third set against Kocovic for a 6-2, 4-6, 6-0 win at No. 1 that clinched victory for the Owls. With the outcome decided, Ismael Lahlou and Katz brought Penn a little closer with wins at Nos. 3 and 4.
The Quakers are back in action on Wednesday morning, taking on Barry in a 10 a.m. match from Miami.
