Men's Tennis Trumps Brown, 5-2

PHILADELPHIA – The men’s tennis team had the chance for revenge today, and they did not waste the opportunity. After beating Brown 4-3 in the regular season last year, the two teams finished as co-champions in the Ivy League, forcing a playoff for the NCAA bid. The Bears won that match, 4-3, eliminating the Quakers from post-season play. The team didn’t forget that loss, and the Quakers have been waiting for another shot at Brown since last April. Today, they got their shot in Providence, and despite the Bears' home court advantage, Penn came away with the 5-2 win.

Justin Fox and Brandon O'Gara got things started for Penn in the No. 3 doubles spot, as they beat Zach Pasanen and Noah Gardner, 8-1. Jason Pinsky and Eric Riley clinched the doubles point shortly after that, as they beat the No. 53 nationally-ranked doubles team of Dan Hanegby and Saurabh Kohli, 8-5. Jonathan Boym and Mikhail Bekker fell to Chris Lee and Eric Thomas, 8-4 in the No. 2 spot, but the point was Penn’s. It was only the third doubles point out of 19 that the Bears have lost all year.

The Quakers continued to succeed in doubles. Pinsky won easily in the No. 1 spot, beating Basu Ratnam, 6-2, 6-2. The next match to finish was a point for Brown, as Fox lost to Thomas in the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-3. But the next three points went to Penn, clinching the win for the Quakers. Boym beat Hanegby, 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot, as Bekker beat Kohli, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 in the No. 3 spot to clinch the win. Joseph Lok made it official, as he beat Pasanen in the No. 5 spot, 6-3, 7-6 (7-5). Freshman Alex Vasin had the only other loss for Penn, as he fell to Gardner in the No. 6 spot, 6-4, 6-4.

With the win, the Quakers improved to 9-11 overall, and 3-0 in the Ivy League. Up next, the Red and the Blue will host Harvard on Friday at 2 p.m., followed by Dartmouth on Saturday at 2 p.m.
