NEW HAVEN, Conn.-- This weekend, the University of Pennsylvania men’s tennis team competed in the Ivy Plus Tournament hosted by Yale. Ten Quakers appeared in the tournament; two reached their singles flight finals, and a duo won their doubles title.
Freshman Matt Nardella, who competed in his singles flight final last weekend and went 3-1, won the Flight C doubles final on Sunday with senior Nikola Kocovic. The pair first defeated Koen Wiggernman and Zvonimir Podvinski from ODU, 8-5. Kocovic and Nardella next faced Columbia’s Shawn Hadavi and Booie Grant and won, 8-4. To compete in the final, Kocovic and Nardella had to beat Dalen Klassen and Trym Nagelstad from Marist-- the Quakers won 8-5. The final was an Ivy showdown with Brown’s Lucas De Silveira and Eli Whittle. The Quakers prevailed 8-4.
Freshman Marshall Sharp and sophomore Zach Lessen advanced to their respective singles flight finals but finished as runner-upsto Dartmouth’s Sam Todd and George Wall. In Flight E, Sharp first faced Army’s Austin McCasin and won 6-3, 6-2. Next up was UNCW's Karan Salwan (1-6, 6-3, 6-5), followed by Yale’s Shawn Hadavi (6-5, 6-1). In the Flight E final, Sharp fell to Todd (5-6, 6-5, 6-4).
Lessen played in Flight F, and only competed against fellow Ivy athletes. Lessen first defeated Yale’s Patrick Chase (6-2, 6-2), then Dartmouth’s Erik Nordahl (6-2, 6-2). The semifinal competition was against Brown’s Eli Whittle, which Lessen won, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4. In the final, Lessen fell to Dartmouth’s George Wall (6-3, 2-6, 6-4).
