Penn's Postseason Qualifiers

PHILADELPHIA - Eleven members of the University of Pennsylvania men's indoor track and field team and three relays qualified for this weekend's IC4A Championships. In all, the Quakers could have athletes participating in up to 13 events at the Boston University Track and Tennis Center on Saturday and Sunday in Boston, Mass.

The two-day postseason meet begins with the heptathlon on Saturday at 11 a.m. The first IC4A champion will be crowned at the end of the pole vault which begins at noon. There are no finals on the track during Day One other than the 3,000 meters at 3:20 p.m. The first day concludes with the trials of the 4x400 relay at 4:50 p.m. On championship Sunday, the shot put and triple jump finals begin at 12:30 p.m., with the first final on the track - the mile - starting at 12:55 p.m. The IC4A team champions will be announced shortly after the 4x400 relay finals at 2:45 p.m.

Freshman Tim Carey and junior Jeff Weinstein each qualified for the IC4A's in three individual events. Carey is eligible for the 60-meter hurdles, 400 and 500 meters, while Weinstein has reached the IC4A benchmark in the 800 meters, mile and 1,000 meters. Sophomore James Finucane is also eligible in more than one individual event after qualifying in the mile and the 1,000 meters.

Last season, Penn sent 13 to the IC4A's, which included five Quakers in individual events and two relay teams. Current junior Luke Grau had the best performance, setting a new collegiate best and moving into fourth-place in the all-time Penn record books in the 5,000 meters.

The Quakers are coming off a seventh-place team finish at the Indoor Heptagonal Championships. Carey earned first-team All-Ivy honors with his winning finish in the 60-meter hurdles.

In the event that members of the team reach NCAA qualifying times during the meet, they will next travel to the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships March 12-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.
