PHILADELPHIA - Franklin Field and the University of Pennsylvania will play host to the Big 5 track and field teams Saturday. The Quakers welcome all of their Philadelphia rivals - Villanova, La Salle, Temple and Saint Joseph's - in addition Lehigh, Columbia and Widener, for the Big 5 Invite.
The field events begin early in the morning with the hammer at 8:30 a.m. The first running event, the 4x100-meter relay, is at 11:15 a.m., and the meet will conclude with the 4x400-meter relay at 3:25 p.m.
Last week, in the 2011 outdoor opener for Penn, the Quakers posted seven top-five finishes at the Wake Forest Open in Winston-Salem, N.C. Freshmen Conner Paez and Maalik Reynolds each finished with runner-up efforts. Paez earned the runner-up spot in the 5,000 meters with his time of 15:04.57, while senior Luke Grau was seventh in the event with a finish of 15:26.56. Reynolds was one of three competitors to pass the bar at 2.05 meters in the high jump.
Last year, Efayomi Carr, Tim Carey, Darryll Oliver, Jeremy Sinclair and the 4x400 relay all posted first-place finishes at the Big 5 Invite. Many of the Quakers who participated were training at lengthier distances as Oliver won the 1,500 meters and Carey won the 800 meters. Carr topped the long jump and Sinclair won the 110-meter hurdles.
A full recap of the meet will appear on PennAthletics.com shortly after the conclusion of the meet.
