PHILADELPHIA - To open the 2011 outdoor campaign, the University of Pennsylvania’s men track and field team will travel to Kentner Stadium in Winston-Salem, N.C., this weekend to compete in the Wake Forest Open.

The meet follows a two-day schedule which starts Friday morning and ends Saturday afternoon. Friday’s field events start with the high jump at 11 a.m. and ends at 5 p.m. with the shot put, while the running events commence with the 100 meters at 1 p.m., and end with the 10,000 meters at 7:30 p.m. Saturday’s field events begin with the pole vault at 10 a.m. and finish with the discus competition at 3 p.m., and the running events lead off with distance medley relay at 11 a.m. The final event is the 4x400-meter relay at 5:30 p.m.

Last year at the Wake Forest Open, then-Junior Darryll Oliver highlighted Penn's first outdoor meet of the season with a victory in the 800 meters. Then-Sophomore Michael Cunningham also posted a first-place finish, winning the 3,000 meters. Two other Quakers also finished in the top-10 in the 123-man field. Freshmen Aki Bajulaiye (1:53.70) and Matt Chylak (1:53.75) finished eighth and ninth, respectively.

Two weeks ago, freshman Maalik Reynolds won the IC4A title in the high jump, junior James Finucane posted the fifth-best mile time in school history and the distance medley relay team finished third at the IC4A's inside the Boston University Track and Tennis Center in Boston, Mass. Penn placed 14th as a team - its best since finishing 13th in 2004. There were 52 schools that scored at the meet. The Quakers finished with 21 points, the second-most of any Ivy League school (Cornell finished in 13th with one more point).
