ANNAPOLIS, Md.--The Quakers took third at the Navy Invitational with 117 points while Anthony Abitante and John Carelli won their events Saturday in Annapolis, Md.
Anthony Abitante cleared 5.05m to take first in the pole vault and give Penn 10 team points. The sophomore had met the NCAA standard (5.05m) last weekend at Wake Forest.He finishedwell ahead of the second-place challenger at 4.75m.
In the triple jump, John Carelli marked 14.93m good for 10 team points in the Quakers.
Joey Brown scored eight points with his second-place finish in the 100m dash in a time of 10.98.
Brown also took second in the 200m dash with a time of 22.25. Grafton Ifill also scored for the Quakers with a time of 22.40.
In the 400m dash, Sam Shepherd scored two points for the Red and Blue with a fifth-place, 49.16 time.
Tim Kaijala took second in the 800m dash with a time of 1:52.83. Bryan Scotland was right behind in third-place at 1:54.59. John Guzman also scored points for Penn with a time of 1:55.98.
Alec Bleday added two points to the Quakers’ team total with a time of 4:02.80 in the 1500m run.
In the 5000m run, Brian Trembley (15:11.25) and Sean McGinley (15:31.59) scored for Penn.
In the 110m hurdles, Max Westman (15.12), Willie Harris (15.22), Kyle Calvo (15.80) scored a combined 15 points for the Quakers.
Dan Howard and Brian Lang also scored some team points with their performances in the 3000m steeplechase. Howard finished at 9:34.14 and Lang crossed at 9:51.25.
Penn’s “A” squad in finished at 42.34 in the 4x100m relay for fourth place. In the 4x400m relay, Penn’s “A” finished in fourth at 3:19.16.
In the field events, Kyle Calvo and Pete Habegger finished second and third in the long jump. Calvo marked 7.01m while Habegger leaped to 6.87m.
In the shot put, Andrew McMillen scored two points for the Quakers throwing a distance of 14.45m.
In the discus throw, Steven Bachman scored two points with a 43.25m mark.
Russ Kochscored two points for in the javelin with a mark of 55.10m.
Navy took home the team title with 212 points. Ivy League foe Princeton scored 142 points for second. Rounding out the field, Rutgers was fourth with 87 points and Colgate scored 28 for fifth.
The Quakers are back in action at the Penn Invitational at Franklin Field, April 7.
