Men's Track Heads to NCAA East Regional

PHILADELPHIA - The Penn men's track team will send three of its athletes to Tallahassee this weekend to compete in the NCAA East Regional, which takes place Friday and Saturday at Florida State.

Senior Tim Kaijala will compete in the 800, which he has won several times at the Heptagonal level including most recently this spring. Kaijala is slated for his prelim Friday at 7 p.m.; the final will take place Saturday at 5:30 p.m. Kaijala enters the meet with a top time of 1:49.02 this season, which is ninth among the 29 men scheduled to compete in the event.

Also on Friday, senior Kyle Calvo will attempt to earn yet another bid to the NCAA Championships when he participates in the long jump beginning at 4 p.m. Calvo -- who has previously qualified for NCAAs in the long jump and as a decathlete -- boasts a top distance of 7.39 meters this season, which places him 25th among the 29 men slated for action in the event.

On Saturday, sophomore John Carelli will participate in the triple jump beginning at 4 p.m. Carelli's top leap this year was 15.01 meters, and he enters the regional seeded 34th out of 36 competitors.

Athletes are competing to qualify for the NCAA Championships, which will take place June 11-14 at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa. It will be the 87th edition of the men's championship, and the 27th for the women.
