Beaumont, Calif. - The University of Pennsylvania men's golf team opened the 2005 spring season at the Braveheart Classic, hosted by the University of California Irvine, on March 7-8.In Penn's first outing of the year, the Quakers finished19that the tournament, shooting a three-round total of 936.
Penn, the only school competing in the tournament from the East Coast, opened the first round with a 319, and shot a312 in the second round. On the second day of competition, the Quakers shot a 305.
Leading the way for the Red and Blue was freshman Dean Merrill, who shot a 227 (81-75-71) to tie for 56th place. His 71 in the third round tiedthe low score for the Quakers during the tournament.Sophomore Sean Barrett was just three strokes behind Merrill, as he shot a 230 (82-77-71), which also included a 71 in the third round.
Derek Rogers (235), Garrett Wentzell (244) and Patrick Cooper (265) also competed for the Quakers.
Penn will continue its spring trip in California this week, playing several local courses.
