Sacramento, Calif. - An 11th place finish at the California International Marathon, held Sunday in Sacramento, was enough to net Penn graduate Mike Cassidy an invitation to next year's U.S.Marathon Olympic Trials, to be held Jan.14, 2012 in Houston.
Cassidy ran Sunday's 26.2-mile course in 2:18:54, meeting the qualifying standards of the USOC and earning him a berth in next month's trials, an eight mile loop course designed to replicate the one that will be run in London this August. Only the top three runners in the trials will make the U.S. Olympic squad.
Cassidy was a member of Penn's cross country and track and field teamsthroughout his four years. His sophomore season, Cassidy came in 30th in the 10,000 meters at the 2005 Penn Relays. As a junior, he led the cross country team during the IC4A Cross Country Championships with a time of 25:47.2 in the five-mile event and finished 64th at the Heptagonal Championships.
