PHILADELPHIA - The University of Pennsylvania Athletics Director, Steve Bilsky, has announced Michael Lane as Penn’s new head coach for women’s crew.
Lane gets the promotion to the head-coaching position after spending the last three years as the program's assistant coach. He will begin in his new position immediately.
“Mike’s experience and track record at Penn, both in his coaching and recruiting, gives us great confidence toward our goal of developing a top-flight women’s rowing program,” said Bilsky. “We did an extensive search, interviewed quality people, and in the end concluded that we had the best candidate here at Penn.”
“I am very excited to be given this opportunity,” said Lane. “I truly believe the women’s crew program here at Penn has the potential to do great things, both in the upcoming year and looking ahead to the future. I think Penn has compiled a great overall staff in the crew office, and I am looking forward to working with all of them. I cannot wait to get started.”
Prior to his appointment at Penn for the 2003-04 season, Lane built an impressive coaching resume. Before accepting the position at Penn, he served as the men’s freshman heavyweight rowing coach at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his responsibilities included organization and management of the freshman team, alumni relations and recruiting.
Before joining the staff at MIT, Lane served as program director and head coach for the Everett Rowing Association from 1997 to 2000. Under Lane’s guidance, the junior men’s crews finished second and fourth at Junior Nationals in three-consecutive seasons from 1998-2000. During his tenure, Lane’s crews also won nine regional championships.
In addition to his responsibilities with the Everett Rowing Association, Lane established the women’s rowing team at Everett Community College in 1998, where he coached for two years. Lane has also served as an assistant coach for the U.S. Rowing Junior Women's Development Camp and the Lake Lanier Rowing Club.
Lane graduated from Suffolk University with a B.A. in business administration and marketing.
