PHILADELPHIA – In the last meet before the 2012 Indoor Heptagonal Championships, the University of Pennsylvania women's indoor track & field team heads back to the historic Armory Track & Field Center for the Millrose Collegiate Invitational on Saturday.
The meet begins at 9 a.m. with the women’s shot put and pole vault. Then, the first track events will start at 10 a.m., with the semifinals of the women’s 60-meter dash. The Millrose Collegiate Invitational concludes with the 4x400-meter relay at 1:29 p.m.
Following this meet, the Quakers have one weekend off to prepare for the 2012 Indoor Heptagonal Championships in Ithaca, N.Y., Feb. 25-26.
Last weekend, the Quakers participated in the New Balance Invitational, also at the Armory. Penn had numerous impressive performances at the event, including the 4x200-meter relay team's school record. Its time of 1:43.41 topped the old record of 1:44.05 - which was set in 1985. Junior Jillian Hart also moved into second place in the school record books in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 3.70 meters (12 feet, 1 1/2 inches), finishing in ninth among 35 competitors.
Last year in the final tune-up prior to Heps, Penn placed sixth of the 14 teams that scored at the Armory Invitational. In the 60-meter dash alone, three Quakers moved up in the school record books. Then-freshman Gabrielle Piper finished seventh with her career-best time of 7.72, which moved her to third all-time in Penn history. Piper also set a career best in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.96.
