PHILADELPHIA - Since starting the Hoops for Haiti initiative on Jan. 25, the University of Pennsylvania’s men’s and women’s basketball teams have already jointly collected more than 350 pairs of shoes at their home games in the last two weeks. The first shipment, which contained approximatley the first 300 pairs, has already been shipped to Haiti.
Donations were accepted from those attending the men’s game versus Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 25 as well as at four games in the women’s first two Ivy League weekends.
The Hoops for Haiti program was initiated by men's head coach, Jerome Allen, to collect old pairs of shoes to be given to those in need on the island of Haiti. In addition, at the men's game against Saint Joseph’s on Jan. 25, the entire Penn coaching staff went without shoes in an effort to bring awareness to the struggles suffered by those in Haiti. All of the players and coaches also wore "Heal Haiti" t-shirts that were specially made for the occasion.
If you unable to donate before, the men’s and women’s teams will continue to accept donations at all of their remaining home games this season. Here is a complete schedule of the upcoming home games for both teams:
