PHILADELPHIA - The Philadelphia Big 5 has announced its weekly award winners in men's and women's basketball, and University of Pennsylvania senior center Darien Nelson-Henry was named Player of the Week on the men's side.
The honor came after Nelson-Henry had a pair of massive games last week. In Wednesday's Big 5 win over La Salle, he set career highs in points (31) and rebounds (14). Nelson-Henry's rebound total was the best by a Penn player since the 2011 season, and his 14 field goals (on 19 attempts) were the most made by a Penn player since Hassan Duncombe hit 15 against Colgate on January 20, 1990. On Sunday, Nelson-Henry scored a team-high 20 points and had nine boards in a loss at Lafayette.
Nelson-Henry has scored in double figures in all six games so far this season, the only player on the roster to accomplish the feat. He also has two double-doubles, and has finished one rebound shy of double-doubles on two other occasions. Overall, the senior is averaging 17.0 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
Penn (4-2) is in action twice this week, hosting Navy on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. and then traveling to George Mason on Saturday for a 6 p.m. tipoff.
