PHILADELPHIA The NCAA Men’s and Women’s Fencing Committee has announced the field of 144 competitors that will participate in the 2007 National Collegiate Men’s and Women’s Fencing Championships. The field includes nine fencers from the University Of Pennsylvania, including five men and four women. Drew University will host the championships, March 22-25, in Madison, New Jersey.
Fencers will compete in a round-robin of 24 fencers in five-touch bouts. After the round-robin, the top four fencers in each event will fence direct elimination 15-touch bouts for first, second, third and fourth place.A team’s place finish in the championships will be based on points earned by each individual. A team will be awarded one point for each victory by its student-athletes for the duration of the championships.
Nine fencers from Penn will participate. From the men’s team, sophomore Benjamin Wieder qualified in epee, while senior Michael Galligan and junior Ron Berkowsky qualified in foil. In sabre, freshman Andrew Bielen and sophomore Matthew Kolasa both qualified. For the women’s team, sophomores Abby Emerson and Ilana Sinkin both qualified in foil, while freshman Alexis Baran and sophomore Cassandra Partyka qualified in women’s sabre.
The fencers qualified based on their performance during the regular season (60 percent), and their performance at Regionals (40 percent), which took place on March 10, in Teaneck, N.J.
