PHILADELPHIA – In its first home match of the 2014-15 season, the ninth-ranked University of Pennsylvania men’s squash team will square off against No. 16 Navy on Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. in Ringe Squash Courts.
Penn (3-0) started its season in Maine, defeating Bates, Colby, and Bowdoin the weekend prior to Thanksgiving. The Quakers dropped Bates, 7-2, before defeating the Mules and Polar Bears by a 9-0 mark.
Also off to an undefeated start at 12-0, Navy’s most notable win came over fellow Ivy, Princeton. The Midshipmen dispatched of the 10th-ranked Tigers, 5-4, last Tuesday.
SCOUTING NAVY: The Midshipmen have started 2014-15 fast and furious with their first 11 wins coming by a 9-0 score. Those wins came in the Navy Round Robin tournament against Fordham, Dickinson, Siena, Boston Univ., Johns Hopkins, Minnesota, Georgetown, Stanford, Denison, Hobart, and Bucknell. Navy tested its mettle against 10th-ranked Princeton with a 5-4 victory, its first over a top-10 team since February of 2012. The Midshipmen are led by senior Andrew McGuinness in the No. 1 position and senior Jim Kacergis in the No. 3 position.
THE SERIES WITH NAVY: Penn leads the overall series with the Midshipmen, 44-26. The Quakers have won the last 14 meetings, including a 6-3 victory at Navy a year ago. Penn is 21-10 all-time at home against Navy, and won their matchup, 8-1, in Ringe during the 2012 season.
LOOKING TO KEEP UP THE HOT START: For the second consecutive season, Penn has begun the year, 3-0. Last season, the Quakers achieved their 3-0 start after defeating Navy 6-3 on Dec. 5. In 2013, Pennwould go on to start 4-0 after defeating Dartmouth, their best start since the 2006-07 team began the season 7-0.
THE FRESHMEN FIVE: Penn sported five freshman it its ladder in the season opening weekend; Marwan Mahmoud, Derek Hsue, Hayes Murphy, Anders Larson, and James Watson. Mahmoud went 2-1 in the No. 1 position, while Hsue (No. 2), Murphy (No. 3), Larson (No. 4,5) and Watson (No. 5,6) all went 3-0.
PENN 2014-15 CAPTAINS: The Quakers are led by senior captains Jack Maine and Michael Mutscheller this season. Maine is in his second year of being a captain and finished with an 8-7 individual record last season playing primarily in the No. 7 and 8 positions. Mutscheller played primarily in the No. 5 or 6 position a season ago, and finished with a 9-6 overall record. Both finished with 4-3 records in Ivy play.QUAKER NEWCOMERS: Penn welcomes five new faces to the men’s squash team in 2014-15, and will look to the freshman to make an immediate impact.
